Front Royal has a rich history and was home to the Shawnee and to the Cherokee. Front Royal was also known by the nickname Helltown, due to the many livestock wranglers and boatman that came down the Shenandoah River seeking alcohol. Front Royal is the only incorporated town in Warren County, VA and was incorporated in 1788. Many people believe that Front Royal got its name from a giant oak tree – the Royal Tree of England, which stood in the public square. Militia marched around the tree and the colonel would yell commands “Front Royal” which meant to the militia to gather and march around the oak tree. Later it was believed to be part of a password to enter the town square. Some have stated that it was French for “le front royal” which mean the British Frontier.
